1 in 8 experience postpartum depression.

I remember sitting beside the community nurse answering the questionnaire, and checking almost every box for symptoms of PPD. I was so tired and overwhelmed that when she looked at me, put her hand on my shoulder and said, what you're going through right now is really hard, I burst into tears.

It felt so good to have someone acknowledge that, because the truth is, it had surprised me. I entered motherhood completely unprepared for what postpartum life was going to be. I had pinned beautiful nursery ideas and kind assumed it would all just "work out."

While postpartum depression was not my fault – it is never anyone's fault – research suggests that it can be, at least in part, situationally-caused. We should be doing everything we can to help expectant parents mitigate these causes.

Knowing this, I wish I spent more time preparing for the reality and the challenges so I would have felt more ready to care for my baby – and so I could have enjoyed that precious time more.
